Case Study:
Late Night at the Euros with Compston and Smart
9x30min episodes, Studio Something for BBC Scotland
Filmed as live in front of a studio audience in Munich during the group stages of Euro 2024. Studio records started at 2pm, and we delivered the DPP master files to BBC Scotland by 6pm the same day to be on air at 10:30pm.
Some VTs were cut in Edit 123 with a few days’ turnaround, the footage uploaded from Germany via LucidLink. Other VTs were filmed on the day at 12pm and streamed back from the location to Glasgow for editing and delivery back to
Munich for 2pm rehearsal. VTs were then played out in the studio during record.
To achieve these turnarounds we adapted our successful “post-on-location” workflow used on A View from the Terrace, with six cameras connected directly to our Cinedeck ingest/transcoding system feeding into a Blackmagic Vision mixer
for camera switching, a VMIX system for VT and graphics playout, a Zoom output for lawyer oversight, connected via an Avid Nexis server to one Avid Media Composer system where the final sequence was built while the record progressed.
This allowed time for editorial changes to be made, with sound sent back to Edit 123 for a dub pass while online fixes/paints were applied. The final mix was uploaded back to the edit in Munich where the AS11 file was produced, eyeballed, QC’d and delivered to BBC Scotland within the 4-hour pre-TX requirement.

“With the creative broadcast engineering Edit123 put in place, it was like
having a more cost-effective equivalent of an OB truck plus a
post-production suite all in one – yet all the kit travelled over in an estate
car! While we were remote, we still felt connected to their post house in
Glasgow. Ultimately it was the key component behind the scenes that
enabled a show like this to happen. We shot like a live broadcast but had
an online pass and delivered the same day with minimal fuss.”
- Andy Maas, Head of Production, Studio Something
The net result of all this hard work/teamwork was a topical,
energetic late-night show, which was incredibly successful,
topping the iPlayer charts and creating lots of viral content.
All in a day’s work!
